About ImagePixel

About ImagePixel

ImagePixel is an independent, free tool for turning an image into pixel art in the browser. It is used for game sprites and avatars, for planning Minecraft builds, and for making charts for fuse beads, cross-stitch and other grid crafts.

ImagePixel is independently operated and is not affiliated with Mojang, Microsoft, Lexaloffle, or any palette, game, or platform referenced for descriptive purposes.

How the converter works

The converter runs entirely in your browser using the Canvas API. Your image is scaled down onto a grid of the size you choose, each cell takes the average color of the area it covers, and then, if you choose a palette or color limit, each cell is matched to the nearest allowed color. Optional Floyd–Steinberg dithering spreads the rounding error to neighboring cells. The result is downloaded as a PNG.

Because the work happens on your device, the source image is not uploaded to ImagePixel's server during conversion. The site still receives ordinary page and analytics requests; see the privacy policy for details.

How our guides are written

Every example image in the guides is produced by the same converter code you use on the site, with the settings stated in its caption. Color and block counts are copied from the converter's count panel for that exact setting, not estimated. When a setting produces a bad result, such as dithering on a flat icon, we show that too.

We only describe features that exist in the current tool, and we say what it does not do. If you find an instruction that no longer matches the tool, please tell us and we will correct it.
